Medical Council of Malawi (MCM) Board Chair Professor John Chisi has backed the punishment melted to Dr. Charles Dzamalala and Dr. Ruth Chimutu in a case surrounding the death of late Kottana Chidyaonga.
Dr. Chimutu has been slapped with 3 months suspension for mistakenly administered the lethal drug veruconium bromide that led to the death of 22-year-old Kotanna Chidyaonga in January 2020.
While Dr. Dzamalala has been found guilty for issuing a fake autopsy report on the death of Chidyaonga.
But punishement handed to the two have attracted mixed reactions with many accusing the MCM board of being too lenient on the matter.
Reacting to the claims Chisi has argued that the punishment given is in line with the procedure and law.
“These penalties are in line with the act of Parliament which governs the Medical Council. Look, professionally, we understand how serious these penalties are. If someone has been given a warning, it’s really scary because they would have to conduct themselves professionally otherwise the next mistake can lead to revocation of license,” Chisi said.
Meanwhile, boyfriend to late Kottana, Timothy Mtilosanje has said he will sue Dzamalala and the state on the matter.
