The Peoples Party (PP) has vested powers to decide on going into alliances in the hands of delegates to its elective convention.
The party, which governed Malawi between 2012 and 2014 has slated its elective convention for first week of September this year.
It is currently Tonse Alliance partner, having endorsed Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) in 2019.
In an interview on the sidelines of a political rally PP leader Joyce Banda addressed in Mzimba over the weekend, the party’s Publicity Secretary Ackson Kalaile Banda said leaders who will be elected at the convention would give direction on alliances.
“Yes we are currently Tonse Alliance partners but we are going to a convetion that will usher in new leaders of the party. After that, we will know which direction to take,” said Kalaile Banda.
However, speaking at the same rally, the party President Joyce Banda said political party alliances are inevitable owing to the 50 percent plus one voting system.
