Potifala Gets 18 Months Jail Term For Forging Official Signature

The Neno First Grade Magistrate’s court has convicted and fined MK120,000.00 to a member of the Malaina Bank Mkhonde Club, Potifala Yohane, or in default to serve an 18-month jail term for forgery.

The court heard that the convict, on April 30, 2024, went to the bank, where he presented a forged cheque worth MK639,000.00 in an attempt to steal the club’s money.

Upon checking the cheque, the bank teller noticed that the convict forged a signature for a council official, and the matter was reported to Neno Police, and he was arrested immediately.

Appearing before the court, Potifala pleaded guilty to the charge of forgery and asked the court for leniency, claiming to be the breadwinner.

But the state prayed for a stiffer punishment, saying the convict betrayed the club’s reputation.

Passing the sentence, First Grade Magistrate Magret Khobiri ordered Potifala to pay the fine as it would deter would-be offenders. He has since paid the fine
