Bolero Police Unit in Rumphi in conjunction with Chikulamayembe Women’s Forum on Monday conducted an orientation on how to combat gender-based violence (GBV) and other related laws.
The orientation, which was attended by Bolero Area Gender Network members comes at a time when there is an increase in GBV cases in the district.
Paramount Chief Chikulamayembe assured the Bolero Area Gender Network of his commitment towards ending the vice.
He urged participants to listen attentively and internalise the skills shared during presentations, saying the knowledge gained will help them in dealing with GBV.
“I assure police of steady steps in support of the initiative to ensure that there is sanity in this area,” he said.
Bolero Police Unit officer-in-charge Yafeti Mtambo said GBV has a negative impact on the development of society.
He advised participants to take bold steps to end the malpractice.
In his presentation, Mtambo explained the meaning of GBV and the role of the police victim support unit and the community in the fight against GBV.
Chikulamayembe Women’s Forum chairperson Tiwonge Gondwe asked participants to join hands with all stakeholders in the fight against the vice.
She advised network members to GBV report GBV to authorities.
