Northern Region Water Board (NRWB) and Mzuzu Police has launched anti-vandalism campaign against public property especially the Board meters and other important property used for water distribution.

Mzuzu Police Assistant Public Relations Officer Rose Chipyola confirmed that the anti-vandalism campaign which has been launched in Mchengautuwa township, come amid unprecedented number of cases concerning theft of water meters.

Chipyola said police are equally concerned because vandalism of water meters leaves people of Mzuzu with no access to portable water.

“The board fails to initiate new developments, as ends up doing the same thing over and over again because of these vandals, and we promise that police will work with the neighborhood watches in all locations in Mzuzu to make sure all notorious criminals are dealt with.” Warned Chipyola.

Chipyola further shared that during the campaign, NRWB Public Relation Officer Edward Nyirenda also indicated that from December 2022 to May 2023 approximately 600 water meters have been reported stolen especially in Mzuzu City.

According to Chipyola, the NRWB official further explained that the vandalism is imposing various risks not only on the customers, but also the company since they are experiencing more losses than profits due to this act. The joint campaign is expected to be conducted in number of places including Zolozolo, Chiwavi, Chibanja, Lubinga, Masasa and the surrounding blocks in Mzuzu.
