Police in Blantyre has fined 104 drivers amounting to 200,000 kwacha each for driving while drunk on various roads around the city which is contrary to section 128 of the Road Traffic Act of Malawi.
The fined motorists committed the crimes during the long weekend of Labour day and Eid Ul-Fitr holidays.
Peter Mchiza, Blantyre Police Public Relations Officer said the development is very sad and it is a barrier to the efforts that they are implementing to reduce road accidents in the country.
“Normally when one drinks alcohol, the judgment is impaired and this may lead to road accidents if the person is driving a vehicle. The aftermath of such accidents may not only affect one person, it may even affect other people,” said Peter
Among the fined, 20 motorists are women who have contributed to road accidents in the city.
Meanwhile, the Police have appealed to the whole public to follow traffic rules whenever they are driving on the roads so that reduction of accidents on the roads could be achieved.
