The Malawi Police Service (MPS) said it is not pleased with the growing tendency of some people using social media platforms such as Facebook to intentionally defame, extort or stalk others and has advised the general public to behave responsibly by respecting other people’s rights.
In a statement released today on their Facebook page, Police said this has come following complaints where some people lodged against others who create social media accounts with fake names and using them to defaming others.
According to MPS, recently they arrested a young man in Blantyre who was using his account with a fake name to trick young men and girls that he would find them blessers/lovers and duped each of them K10,000 alleged connection fee.
In addition to that, on Saturday, December 10, 2022 Police also arrested two young men in Blantyre Aubrey Alfonso aged 23 and Leonard Lungu aged 23 for defamation.
The two have been using their Facebook accounts bearing fake names to falsely attack and defame Prophet Shepherd Bushiri.
The statement continued that it is everyone’s right to freely express their opinions but it is incumbent upon everyone to behave responsibly by respecting other people’s rights.
The police then asked people to enjoy responsibly.
