Police arrest two for mistaken identity murder

Police in Lilongwe have arrested two men for allegedly killing a 44-year-old man after they had mistaken him to be a man who stole two donkeys.

The suspects are identified as Doming Master Sato, 58 and Daniel Master, 25 and have been on the run after killing Maupo Shawale.

The murder happened at Kuchipera Village Traditional authority (TA) Chadza on 6 July. Shawale was confronted by the pair who were with three others still at large and accused him of stealing Sato’s donkeys.

Despite denying any knowledge, he was assaulted to death. However, Sato’s donkeys were found a day later in the hands of two other suspects. A police manhunt led to the arrest of Sato and Daniel.

Deputy Public Relations Officer for Central Region Police, Foster Benjamin said the two murder suspects are expected to appear in court soon to answer the murder charge.

Meanwhile, a search for the three other suspects is still underway. In the meantime, Lilongwe Police Station is warning people against administering mob justice or face arrest.
