People’s Transformation Movement (Petra) has joined forces with MISA Malawi to ask for the safety of Platform for Investigative Journalism (PIJ) Editorial Director Gregory Gondwe.
The seasoned journalist exposed payments that Malawi Defence Force reportedly made to fraud suspect, businessman Zuneth Sattar, for an arms deal.
In a press statement dated February 2 and signed by Communications Director Demister Chimombo, Petra says it is most baffling that the Tonse regime in its wisdom finds it acceptable to continue indulging itself in procurement deals with or through a man that president Lazarus Lazarus Chakwera openly condemned in 2022 following an Anti-Corruption Bureau report of alleged fraudulent involvement of some government and security officials.
The party has asked the government to bring out a rebuttal with clear facts if the story is untrue.
“Silence in the face of a serious allegation means only one thing-that is consent. President Chakwera shall therefore be held be held personally accountable should the said journalists’ safety be compromised in any manner whatsoever,” part of the statement reads.
Misa Malawi and other organisations have also made similar condemnations on the matter.
