Mulanje Mountain Conservation Trust has advised people from Phalombe and Mulanje districts to conserve trees in the mountains and other places to lessen the impact of climate change such as floods.

Speaking on Monday during a donation of relief items, the trust’s environmental and communication officer Kondwani Chamwala said it was, therefore, important to plant more trees in bare lands in the mountains and along river banks.

“There is need to plant more trees everywhere, including bare lands of mountains and other places and conserve existing ones to prevent flooding,” he said.

Senior Chief Kaduya agreed with Chamwala on the need to protect the trees.

She appealed to people in the district to plant trees in their locations.

“We need to protect trees and plant more to mitigate the effects of climate change,” said Kaduya.

Martha Mulire, one of the beneficiaries at Chipole camp in Traditional Authority Mkhumba, thanked the trust for the support.

She asked other well-wishers to help with items to move out of the camp.

“We were running out food, therefore, we ask for items such as plastic sheets, tarpaulins and kitchen utensils to return home and construct temporary shelters,” said Mulire.

The donated items included maize flour, cooking oil, bags of matemba fish and soya pieces worth K10 million and will benefit six camps in the two districts.
