People in Mchinji District have commended the Malawi Social Cash Transfer Programme for transforming their lives.
Speaking on Saturday when beneficiaries received their money at Ndawambe, Menyani, Mgulura and Nyamawende clusters in Traditional Authority (T/A) Mlonyeni, one of the beneficiaries Lonisa Banda said she used the money to venture into livestock farming.
“I first received K17 000 which I saved until I was able to buy pigs. I saved the money again and now I have bought iron sheets for my house,” she said.

Another beneficiary, Onesita Banda, said she connected her house to the national electricity grid and she is able to buy fertiliser for her farm.
Mchinji district principal social welfare officer Emmanuel Gervazio emphasised the importance of telling beneficiaries that the project will phase out.
“This will motivate them to use the money for profitable programmes, which will transform their lives,” he said.
Gervazio expressed satisfaction with the programme in the district, saying it has transformed lives of beneficiaries.
“Some beneficiaries have renovated their houses while others have ventured in livestock farming,” he said.
Ndawambe Cluster chairperson Pilivati Tembo said he ensures that beneficiaries put the money to good use.
Social Cash Transfer Programme started in 2006 as a pilot project in Mchinji and later scaled up to other districts.
The programme is targeting 80 village clusters with 9 466 beneficiaries in all T/As.
