People from Traditional Authority Kabudula in Lilongwe District have commended Climate Smart Enhanced Public Works Programme for improving their livelihoods.

Speaking on Monday during cash disbursement in Deya Catchment Area, group village head Kudoko said people will use the money to buy food.

“This is a good initiative because it empowers people economically and at the same time, the work they do will help to restore the environment,” he said.

One of the beneficiaries, Aida Mastala, said the money will address some of the challenges her family is facing.

“I plan to restart my mandasi [fritters] business which I failed to sustain due to lack of capital. I ask my fellow beneficiaries to use the money for its intended purpose,” she said.

Lilongwe District Council director of finance Charles Mhone said they will spend K703 million on payments.

He, however, said beneficiaries will only be paid according to the number of days they worked.

In the district, the programme is targeting 24 628 beneficiaries. Each beneficiary worked for 24 days and received K28 000.

Climate Smart Enhanced Public Works Programme is a component of Social Support for Resilient Livelihood Project, a Malawi Government project implemented by National Local Government Finance Committee and funded by the World Bank.
