PAC wants to meet Chakwera for update

Quasi-religious body Public Affairs Committee (PAC) has unveiled plans to seek an audience with President Lazarus Chakwera to remind him of the need to address governance concerns they raised in January this year.

Speaking in an interview yesterday after meeting Chakwera at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe to discuss interventions to fight polio in the country, PAC chairperson Father Francis Thawale said while the President showed willingness to respond to their concerns, they plan to meet him before the 90-day ultimatum expires to remind him of the unaddressed issues.

He said PAC did not want to hijack the polio discussion, but gave it priority considering that it is an emergency requiring swift response.

Said Thawale: “We are happy to note that the President has responded to some of our concerns. He made some changes to the Cabinet, but we feel there is more he can do.

“We are also glad to note that he is quite accommodating; when we propose for a meeting, he is always willing to attend to us. So, we are planning to meet him again and remind him of those concerns and we are sure he will accommodate us.”

In January, PAC met Chakwera at Sanjika Palace in Blantyre and  raised several governance concerns. PAC asked the President to reshuffle his Cabinet and dismiss ministers suspected of involvement in corruption.

PAC also asked Chakwera to fire Secretary to the President and Cabinet Zanga-Zanga Chikhosi on the basis that his decisions had eroded public trust in him.
