Nurses, Midwives to call for a national wide strike over salaries

The National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives (NONM) and the Physician Assistants Union of Malawi have given the government a 7-day ultimatum to address their concerns, or else they will hold a national-wide sit-in.

Among others, they are demanding a 44% salary and allowance increment to align with the recent kwacha devaluation to cushion nurses, midwives, and physicians from the economic hardships.

Speaking to journalists in Lilongwe this afternoon, NONM first vice president Hannah Mtemang’ombe says they have had several engagements with the government, but there has been no tangible response.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda says they have received the letter today and have already started engaging them on the matter.
