Nurses back with national wide strike over allowances

National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives (NONM) says it will continue with its planned protests over government’s delay to start giving them their allowances.

This follows the government’s alleged failure to update them on the matter as promised.

A fortnight ago, officials from NONM, Physicians Assistants Union of Malawi (Paum) and government met to discuss the issue where the health workers had planned to demonstrate following government’s delay to start giving them new allowances which were approved in February this year.

But in a letter that NONM president Shouts Simeza and Paum president Solomon Chomba have co-written, Ministry of Health officials promised to provide a progress update within 14 days which they have not.

The letter says they will proceed with their plans as they are yet to receive necessary feedback as expected.
