Nsanje District Council says it is ready to implement the Child and Youth Friendly Communities Initiative (CYFCI) in reforming the local governance system.

Speaking during the extraordinary full council meeting last week, chairperson Rose Makiyi said the programme will create opportunities that will accelerate progress for children and youths.

She said the initiative will include issues that relate to children and youths by telling their stories in the development of village action plans.

Said Makiyi: “We have planned to increase the proportion of youths and children with access to spaces where they can amplify their voices, strengthen and enforce legislation and policies related to them.

“The project will also increase awareness on youths, children’s rights and participation among stakeholders.”

Nsanje South West Constituency member of Parliament Eurita Valeta said many youths and children are facing challenges that are preventing them from participating in developmental projects.

“We have youths who are failing to access quality education because of lack of classrooms and learning materials.

“Through this project, many students from poor families will get bursaries to further their studies at secondary and tertiary levels,” he said.

Valeta further asked the council to implement the plans they have put in place. CYFCI is funded by the United Nations Children’s Fund.
