National Publications Limited (NPL) has organised a mother’s fun run initiative on November 15 2022 to raise funds to buy wheelchairs for Dowa District Hospital’s maternity ward.
Speaking to journalists on Wednesday in Lilongwe, NPL business development manager Chimwemwe Jere said they are targeting to buy 20 wheelchairs.
Jere: We want to help mothers
“Our organisation believes in corporate social responsibility. We organise one activity a year and this time we want to help mothers in Dowa District,” he said.
Jere appealed to well-wishers to take part in the initiative that seeks to reduce maternal and neonatal deaths.
Dowa District Hospital spokesperson Peter Makonza said currently maternal death in Dowa is at 105 per 100 000 mothers and they target to reduce it to 70 per 100 000 by 2030.
He said they face challenges such as shortage of medical supplies and equipment, shortage of health workers and prolonged electricity blackouts as well as interrupted water supply.
“Dowa District Hospital is also facing shortage of wheelchairs for the maternity ward. That is why we thank NPL for coming to our rescue,” said Makonza.
He said they are currently repairing few wheelchairs to mitigate the problem.
