No cholera case in Zomba since rains started

Zomba District Health Office (DHO) says the district has not yet reported any cholera cases despite the persistent rains the district is currently receiving.

According to the District Health Promotion Officer, Arnold Mndalira, if the trend continues, this would be the seventh year since the district reported its last cholera case.

He said apart from the sanitation and hygiene promotion campaigns, the cholera vaccine administered to those in cholera-prone areas has contributed significantly in containing the disease.

“The first vaccine was administered in 2016 and the second one in 2021. It is, therefore, due to these vaccines that we have been able to report zero cholera case this year and for the past six years,” said Mndalira.

The HPO said despite the successful story, the health office continues to distribute chlorine to people for home use with support from its partners.
