Nkhotakota District Counsel has launched a youth project to empower young people with vocational and entrepreneurial skills in the district.
The youth project, implemented under the National Youth Policy, will also encourage young people to undertake development activities in their communities.
Speaking in an interview on Monday, Nkhotakota district youth officer Alick Mwale said they already oriented the district’s youth network leaders on the programme.
Mwale: We target
hardworking youths
“We are targeting hardworking youths to benefit from the programme because we will equip them with vocational and entrepreneurial skills to start workshops or businesses in their communities,” he said.
Mwale asked youths in the district who have not yet joined these youth networks to do so to benefit from the programme.
In random interviews, young people hailed the programme, saying it will help to reduce unemployment in the district.
Dyson Sadzi, a youth at Nkhotakota Boma, said he has not found a job since he finished his secondary school education in 2019.
“I have a Malawi School Certificate of Education, but cannot find employment. I, therefore, welcome the programme because I will acquire technical skills that I will use to earn a living,” he said.
However, Sadzi asked political leaders to desist from politicising the programme.
The National Youth Service is a project implemented by the Ministry of Sports and Youth.
