Nkhotakota community requests police unit reopening to tackle rising crime

The community of Nkhotakota has requested the Malawi Police Service to reopen the Mpondagaga Police Unit, which was vandalized during a recent incident.

The Traditional Authority Mphonde of the area has complained about the increase in criminal activities such as theft of crop produce and violence against girls since the police unit was closed.

The community has taken action to address the issue by contributing MK500,000 to rehabilitate the police unit. The funds were raised by the people from the area of Group Village Head Mvula, where the mob which allegedly vandalized the police unit came from.

The Nkhotakota Police Station Officer In-charge, Petro Mkokamasa, has confirmed that the request to reopen the police unit has been received and forwarded to the National Police Headquarters for consideration.
