Nico Life Insurance Company Limited has partnered with the Super League of Malawi (Sulom) to come up with the Sapota Funeral Cover for football fans.

During the launch ceremony at Sunbird Mount Soche in Blantyre on Tuesday, the company’s chief executive officer Eric Chapola said the initiative, which has Junior Flames coach Patrick Mabedi as its ambassador, aims to provide relief for the families of football fans when death strikes and help the clubs grow financially.

The cover will see the fans buying monthly premiums of K150 or K500 for their families to claim financial support of K150 000 or K600 000 once the member dies.

Chapola: A good fan thinks about tomorrow

To register, a fan is required to have a national identity card, dial *325# on either TNM or Airtel networks and follow the instructions.

“The idea is that when death strikes in the Malawi football family, Nico Life should be there to help within 24 hours,” he said.

Chapola said that the initiative will also help clubs to grow financially as 20 percent of the premiums and profits will be given to Sulom to share among the 16 TNM Super League clubs.

“A good supporter thinks about tomorrow and helps his team to grow. The more supporters join the cover, the better the teams will develop. Players and supporters should not struggle and beg when death occurs,” he said.

On his part, Sulom president Tiya Somba-Banda described the partnership as historical and something that will help the league to be more competitive.

He said: “This is a step we have to take as we take football as business. This will help to make the league more competitive as funds will be distributed to the clubs in accordance with their respective standings.

“A team at the summit of the table will be getting a bigger cut than those at the bottom. As a result, the league will be more competitive.”

Some of the supporters who attended the event, Yona Malunga and Isaac White, said they are happy that Nico Life and Sulom have thought about the plight of the supporters and the clubs.

“This is a way to go because, we supporters, are also being considered. It is a welcome development,” Malunga said.
