Ngunde now Law Society boss

Malawi Law Society (MLS) has appointed its honorary secretary Chrispin Chimwemwe Ngunde as its new executive director with effect from March 1 2023.

MLS president Patrick Mpaka said in a statement on Thursday Ngunde’s appointment followed rigorous interviews the society conducted on January 21 2023 where five candidates were shortlisted for the position.

Will take up role on March 1: Ngunde

Ngunde will serve the society as executive director from March 1 2023 to February 28 2026 subject to the terms of his contract and terms of the Legal Education and Legal Practitioners Act (the Act).

Mpaka said Ngunde, who has 13 years of public and private practice experience at the Malawi Bar has shown remarkable dedication to the cause of the society and has been directly involved at executive committee level in the development and implementation of its current Strategic Plan and Executive Committee’s Policy for the Reform epoch.

Before his appointment, Ngunde was the society’s honorary secretary for the period 2021 to 2023.

Between 2019 and 2021 he served as MLS Treasurer and chaired the MLS Events and Fundraising Committee from 2016 to 2018.

With this appointment and in terms Section 77(2)(c) of the Legal Education and Legal Practitioners Act, Ngunde tendered his resignation notice on February 28 2023 as honorary secretary.

Based on MLS statutes, MLS treasurer Phatuma Mataka will from March 1 2023 combine the roles of honorary secretary until the next annual general meeting.
