Faithful Heart Foundation has constructed five toilets for girls worth K12. 2 million in two primary schools in Chikwawa District.

Speaking on Saturday during the handover at John Primary School in Traditional Authority (T/A) Ngowe, Faithful Heart Foundation coordinator Bishop Alex Steven Bango said they wanted to promote hygiene in the schools and give dignity to girls who had no proper toilets.

Ngowe: Toilets have given girls dignity

“We constructed three toilets at John Primary School at K6.3 million and two at Konzere Primary School at K5.9 million with funding from United States-based Bread and Water for Africa organisation,” he said.

In his remarks, John Primary School deputy head teacher Isaac Chasauka thanked the organisation for the initiative.

“There were no toilets at the school, which compromised hygiene and sanitation. The toilets will not only improve hygiene at the school, but also motivate girls to come to school,” he said.

Chasauka appealed to other well-wishers to help construct more toilets, saying the school has 552 learners.

T/A Ngowe agreed with Chasauka’s sentiments on the need to construct more toilets at the school.

“It was difficult for learners, especially girls, to answer the call of nature. The toilets have given them the dignity they deserve,” he said.

The school’s head girl Success Dimba said girls were missing classes during their menstruation because there were no proper changing rooms at the institution.

“However, we ask non-governmental organisations to teach us how to make reusable pads to enhance menstrual hygiene,” she said.
