Water Mission has commissioned a K143 million piped water project at Kapiri Trading Centre in Senior Chief Dambe’s area in MchinjiDistrict.

The reticulated water system project consists of solar-powered panels, storage tanks, pipelines, treatment plants, control units and hydrants, is expected to serve 18 000 people.

Speaking at the event on Tuesday in Mchinji, the non-governmental organisation’s  country director Nixon Sinyiza said they provide access to safe water to communities in the country.

He said: “We received a request from the district commissioner that people at Kapiri Trading Centre were in need of potable water.

“We conducted an assessment and sourced money from George Fisher and McKimmon Family for the project.”

Sinyiza said the water system has a life span of 20 years, but can go up to 30 years if well maintained.

Mchinji acting district commissioner Raymond Nkhonya commended Water Mission for the initiative.

He said: “Water is life as you know. The project is essential for people of Kapiri who experienced water challenges.

“We expect that the availability of water will enhance sanitation in the area.”

Senior Chief Dambe said the water table in the area is low, making it difficult to drill boreholes.

“Water will help people enhance their personal hygiene, especially in the wake of Covid-19,” he said.

Kapiri Water Committee chairperson Christina Kumitengo said they will ensure that people do not vandalise the facilities.

She said: “We used to drink from unsafe sources, as such, we will ensure that people take care of the facilities and we will soon engage communities on the regulations.”
