NGO donates K200m worth of computers to 20 schools

Ministry of Education deputy director of science, technology and innovation George Vakusi has commended Tigwirane Manja Aids Supporting Group for donating 460 laptop computers worth K200 million to 20 schools in Kasungu District.

Speaking on Monday after the handover, he said the computers will help the schools to introduce computer studies, an examinable subject in secondary schools.

“We are pleased with the donation which will make primary and secondary school learners computer literate. This is what we want as a ministry, that learners should have computer knowledge before going to universities in this digital era,” said Vakusi.

He said government is buying computers for schools in the country, but has no capacity to give all the secondary schools the needed computers at once.

Tigwirane Manja Aids Support Group executive director Peter Minjale said they wanted to fill the computer literacy gap which exists among learners in rural primary and secondary schools.

“Together with our donors, Bridges to Malawi, we noted that there is a huge computer knowledge gap among students in rural schools compared to students in urban schools,” he said.

Wimbe Primary School deputy head teacher Clement Bvutani thanked Tigwirane Manja for the donation.

“The computers and the projector will help the school migrate to digital learning. Again, we will also teach children basic computer skills,” he said.

Apart from the 460 computers, the organisation also donated 35 iPhones, 20 projectors and 10 monitors to beneficiary schools which include Wimbe Primary School as well as Kasungu Boma and Simlemba community day secondary schools.

In recent times, different stakeholders are promoting basic computer literacy among secondary school students after noticing that students from rural secondary schools who go to universities struggle to use computers.
