Foundation for Community Support Services (Focus) development facilitator Chimwemwe Ndundu has warned farmers in Mpata and Lupembe extension planning areas (EPAs) under Karonga District Agricultural Development Division (ADD) against selling seeds for backyard and winter cropping.

He issued the warning on Monday after distributing maize and vegetable seeds to 2071 farmers affected by dry spell in the area.

Ndundu said: “We are working in the district that has been worst hit by drought and in complementing government’s efforts to ensure that farmers are food secure, we have distributed the seeds, including potato vines and cassava cuttings for winter cropping.”

Karonga ADD crops officer Stocker Nundwe commended the organisation for the seeds and urged farmers to ensure that they follow modern farming technologies to harvest enough for consumption.

Lead farmer Meckson Kuyokwa from Mwenitanga 4 Village in Paramount Chief Kyungu said the seed will be put to good to help them avert hunger.

Focus is implementing Harvesting Prosperity and Resilience project in the two EPAs with funding from United States-based Rise Against Hunger.
