The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) has appointed former University of Malawi (Unima) seasoned academician associate professor Ngeyi Ruth Kanyongolo as Vice Chancellor of Catholic University of Malawi (Cunima).
A statement issued by ECM today says the appointment of the former Unima dean of Faculty of Law and senior lecturer is with effect from March 5 2024.
Kanyongolo, who served Unima for 23 years, takes over the leadership mantle from Reverend George Buleya who retired last year and will be the institution’s third vice chancellor. Buleya took over from Professor Anacleate Phiri in May 2015.
“Associate Prof Kanyongolo brings to Cunima vast experience in academia, an excellent record in national and international networking, resource mobilization, research, consultancy, community engagement and significant inclusive and transformative leadership skills,” reads the statement signed ECM president Father George Buleya.
During her 23 years with Unima, Kanyongolo served as a member of senate, dean of Faculty of Law, head of department and patron of the students union. She also served on several Unima committees and coordinated research and masters’ programme.
Prior to joining the academia, she worked as assistant registrar for Unima servicing and representing the council of the university.
Associate Prof Kanyongolo has served on a number of boards including most recently the boards of Standard Bank, Airtel and Old Mutual.
She also served as vice president and president of the Malawi Law Society (MLS) and Women Lawyers Association respectively.
The newly appointed Cunima vice chancellor holds a number of qualifications including a PHD in law from the University of Warwick (2007), Master’s degree in Law from the University of London (1997) and a Bachelor’s degree in Law (Honours) from the University of Malawi (1991).
She began her career as a lecturer in law at Unima rising to associate professor of law before retiring in 2023 year.
