New Adus bishop to be enthroned today

After years of warring factions in the Anglican Diocese of Upper Shire (Adus) culminated in the  diocese staying two years without a spiritual father, the dust finally will settle down in the diocese.

Today, former bishop of the Diocese of Eastern Zambia William Mchombo is being enthroned as Adus bishop, replacing Brighton Vitta Malasa, who, at the heat of the disagreements, was in October 2022 ex-communicated.

To be enthroned today: Mchombo

Mchombo’s enthronement organising committee chairperson Winasi Boma confirmed in an interview yesterday that the ceremony is on today.

He disclosed that the function is expected to be attended by President Lazarus Chakwera, Vice-President Saulos Chilima and leaders of other churches.

Boma further said that Archbishop Albert Chama, who is head of the Anglican Province of Central Africa (Apca) covering Anglican dioceses in Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Botswana, will be the main celebrant.

Chama will be joined by other Anglican bishops in the province and the Dean of the Cathedral, the Very Reverend Canon Mchakama, to conduct the church rituals of giving powers to Mchombo to lead the diocese.

“The function will be spiced up with several activities from women and men guilds and choirs,” he said.

Adus covers the districts of Mangochi, Machinga, Zomba, Balaka, Ntcheu, Mwanza, Neno and part of Dedza.

Bishop Mchombo was born in Salima on August 21 1962.
