The Court in Mzuzu has granted bail to Mayor Gift Desire Nyirenda who is also councilor for Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

Senior Resident Magistrate Felix Kamtsalira said there is no evidence that the accused would interfere with investigations and tamper with state witnesses.

He also said the state agreed with the defendants that the accused has a permanent resident in Mzuzu hence not a flight risk.

Kamtsalira however said Nyirenda is answering serious charges.

Nyirenda is being accused of defiling a 14 year old niece at his house in Mzuzu and was arrested last Saturday.
