Malawi Watershed Services Improvement Project (Mwasip) has disbursed K131 million under Community Environmental Conservation Fund to three catchment areas to empower communities  to uplift their livelihoods through small-scale businesses.

The three catchment areas are Mfundazi, Mkulumadzi and Golden where 53 village level action plan (VLAP) members will benefit from the revolving funds.

During a handover ceremony at Neno Community Ground, district commissioner Rosemary Nawasha encouraged the participating members to venture into meaningful enterprises that should transform their lives.

“The funds are meant to improve your lives as you are conserving the environment. Don’t spend the money on food, but rather invest it in small businesses,” she said.

Nawasha, therefore, thanked traditional leaders for taking a leading role in encouraging their subjects to conserve the environment.

Sub-Traditional Authority Chikalema also thanked Neno District Council for implementing Mwasip.

He said the fund will motivate communities to put more efforts in conserving the environment.

One beneficiary from Mfundazi Catchment Management Committee, Tanazio Mlikita, said the money will be used for the intended purpose.

Neno district Mwasip project coordinator Vincent Sambuka said they disbursed the funds to VLAP members after successful implementation of Sustainable Land Management (SLM) activities.
