MP Jason Kaneka formally charged after killing a pedestrian

Blantyre West Member of Parliament-MP, Jason Kaneka, 56, has been charged with reckless driving after his vehicle allegedly hit to death a 36-year old Rwandese businesswoman, Janet Musabyimana in Mangochi district.

Mangochi Police spokesperson, Amina Tepani Daudi confirms the development; saying the incident happened at Likala Village along the Arthur Peter Mutharika Highway in the district.

It is reported that the lawmaker was driving a Toyota Hilux registration BU8633, from the direction of Liwonde heading towards Mangochi Boma.

“Upon arrival at Likala Village, due to overspeeding, Kaneka lost control of the motor vehicle and swerved to the nearside of the road where he hit six people who were chatting near the side of the road,” says Daudi.

Daudi adds Musabyimana sustained severe head injuries and was rushed to Mangochi District Hospital where she died while receiving treatment.

The other five people escaped with minor injuries and were treated as outpatients at the same hospital.

Meanwhile, the MP is currently out on bail.
