‘Mozambique trip to strengthen trade ties’

President Lazarus Chakwera has described his trip to Mozambique, saying fruitful and will help to strengthen trade ties between the two countries.

The President said his visit was important as there is now hope of improvement of electricity through the Malawi-Mozambique Interconnection Project which he and President Filipe Nyusi launched on Thursday.

Chakwera said this at Kamuzu International Airport on arrival from Mozambique on Sunday.

He said: “We had a number of discussions and, among others, was the interconnection project which is expected to improve the electricity challenges that the country is facing.

Also as Sadc [Southern African Development Community] chairperson, we discussed the ongoing conflicts at Cabo Delgado.”

The President said among others, he visited some major development projects such as the Nacala Port, which he said will cut transportation cost of goods and services to Malawi by a third.

“Lastly, we had a business meeting where we discussed several trade issues between the two countries which will help in the economic development of both countries,” said Chakwera.

The President left for Mozambique on April 21.
