More than 70 people have died and more than 50 have been injured after fire gutted five-storey building in Johannesburg South Africa.
According South Africa’s Emergency services, the fire has gutted the building at about 01:30 (00:30 BST) on Thursday August 31, 2023.
The cause of the fire remains unknown as the authorities has said that it’s unclear what sparked the blaze and the death toll is expected to rise, according to authorities.
Firefighters evacuated several people from the building and the injured were treated on the scene or transported to hospitals.
The building which is described as “hijacked”, meaning it is used by squatters as it has a home to many refugees and migrants from African countries.
