Mission declares Kenya elections satisfactory

A solidarity mission of the Association of African Electoral Authorities (AAEA) led by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Justice Chifundo Kachale has described the August 9 general election in Kenya as satisfactory.

The solidarity mission, comprising members of  election management bodies from Ghana, Sierra Leone, Rwanda, Liberia, and Malawi, observed Kenya elections from August 6 to 11 2022.

In a press statement release yesterday, the mission commended the people of Kenya, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), all political actors and the civil society for the political maturity demonstrated throughout the entire electoral process.

It said among others, the polling stations it visited proceeded to count the ballots soon after the close of the polls in the presence of representatives of parties and candidates as well as national and international observers.

“We specifically visited the media monitoring unit to appreciate the impact of coordinated data collection for effective decision-making across all critical agencies during election,” reads the statement in part.

According to BBC reports, with almost half of the results from Kenya’s presidential election now confirmed, the two main candidates are running neck and neck.

Deputy President William Ruto has taken a slight lead over ex-Prime Minister Raila Odinga with 51 percent against 48 percent.

In the election, Kenyans voted for president, senators, members of the national assemblies and county governors.

The Association of African Election Authorities is a regional network of election management bodies.  The organisation is dedicated to professionalising election administration through information exchange and regional networking.
