Ministry summons Ichocho

Listen

Ministry of Homeland Security has summoned Power Security Services (IPS) Yasin Suwedi over a recent video which authorities said was a threat to national security.

The ministry ’s Principal Secretary (Legal) Steven Kayuni in a letter to Suwedi said the meeting will be held at Capital Hill on Tuesday.

Reads the letter in part: “Kindly attend the disciplinary committee hearing scheduled for the 2nd of May, 2023, at 10:00 in the forenoon, at the Ministry of Homeland Security Conference Room, Capital Hill.”

In an interview yesterday, Suwedi, also popularly known as Ichocho, said he had received the summons.

Ng’oma: He must tell us his side of
the story

He said: “I will be in Lilongwe on Tuesday for that meeting.”

Suwedi, in a video message meant to be a promotion stunt, claimed to have kidnapped Entertainers Promotions (EP) chief executive officer Tonderai Banda to force his father Jai Banda, a lawyer by profession to help the company to be recognised as one of the nation’s security agencies.

He was later arrested over the clip and after his release, he clarified that the clip was actually a marketing stunt which was done to promote an event that EP was holding where IPS was also tasked to provide security.

However, Homeland Security Minister Ken Zikhale Ng’oma was incensed and described the video as illegal.

He ordered that the ministry should revoke the company’s licence.

In an interview yesterday, Zikhale Ng’oma said the meeting is to accord Suwedi an opportunity to tell the ministry his side of the story and also allow him to apologise in person.

“We have [terrorism] issues in Mozambique with Carbo Delgado and what he did raised fears about national security,” he said
