Ministry softens up on Nomads, BB Kamuzu Stadium lease bid

The Ministry of Youth and Sports says Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and FCB Nyasa Bullets can re-submit their bids on their intention to lease Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

About three years ago, the two giants submitted a joint bid to lease the facility which was turned down by the ministry.

The ministry’s latest position follows a suggestion by Wanderers president and board chairperson Thomson Mpinganjira that government should consider leasing them the stadium as they await the completion of the stadia that are being constructed in Soche and Zingwangwa townships.

Mpinganjira: We will follow it up

“In the meantime, we want to see if we can get a stadium and see whatever we can do. Even if you gave us Kamuzu Stadium, we can run it and make it better than it is now,” he said.

In response, the ministry’s spokesperson Macmillan Mwale said: “The previous joint bid was not approved. It was not practical at that time, but from that time, a lot has happened and things have evolved.

“They [Wanderers and Bullets] have moved on in terms of capacity. The organisational structure of both teams has changed.

“So, if they can re-submit, we should be able to take it from there.”

Reacting to the ministry’s stand in an interview yesterday, Mpinganjira said they will pursue the issue.

During the Super League of Malawi fundraising dinner held in Lilongwe four weeks ago, Mpinganjira, who was guest of honour, said: “Constructing a stadium is not easy, lucky are the teams sponsored by government… Civo [Civil Service United], Silver [Silver Strikers], they didn’t build for themselves.

“[And] I don’t understand why they [government] are denying Bullets and Wanderers stadiums…they even want to change names, this is serious.

“Government built stadiums for Silver and Civo, why not do the same for Bullets and Wanderers which are the oldest teams [in the country]? What is football in Malawi without Bullets and Wanderers?”
