Minister of Local Government, Unity and Culture Richard Chimwendo Banda has described the Cape Maclear Road and Nkhudzi-Bay Water projects, currently underway in Mangochi District, critical to the country’s development.
He said this on Sunday at Cape Maclear in Mangochi during a rally he organised after inspecting Cape Maclear Road to appreciate its progress.
Malawi Government launched Cape Maclear Road project in 2021 after observing that the road was in a bad shape.
Government also endorsed the Nkhudzi-Bay Water Project, popularly known as the Mangochi Water Project, to address water challenges in the lakeshore district.
Speaking during the rally, the minister said: “I am happy with the progress of the road because there is a sign that it will be finished soon.

“This road is important because it will connect farmers and fishers from Cape Maclear to Mangochi, Monkey-Bay and other places to sell their produce and fish.”
Chimwendo-Banda also said the road will ease mobility for tourists to Cape Maclear, which will contribute towards the country’s development.
He said for a long time, despite staying closer to the lake, people in Mangochi have been drinking unsafe water; hence, the Nkhudzi-Bay Water Project to give residents potable water.
“As government, we gave a nod to these projects because they are essential to people of Mangochi and the country’s development,” said Chimwendo-Banda.
In his remarks, Malawi Congress Party (MCP)second deputy secretary general Gerald Kazembe thanked government for embarking on the two projects in the district.
“Potable water is necessary for people to live healthy lives while the road network will ease mobility for businesspeople and tourists to Cape Maclear,” he said.
