Minister commends council over technical college

Minister of Labour Agnes NyaLonje has commended Nkhotakota District Council, community members and other stakeholders for their commitment to ensure that Kalinda Community Technical College becomes operational.

Speaking on Wednesday during a tour of the learning institution, the minister said what the council did to approach partners such as Illovo Sugar (Malawi) plc and Wildlife Environmental Society of Malawi to provide support has had a great impact in ensuring that the college becomes operational.

She said her ministry will provide more support to the college by constructing houses for tutors and boarding facilities for students.

“Officials in the district have done a commendable job to approach their partners. The ministry will provide more support to ensure the construction works are done as well as providing the necessary teachers for the facility,” said NyaLonje.

Nkhotakota District Council chairperson councillor Charles Chimzukuzuku said the council is committed to continue working hand in hand with various partners to ensure smooth implementation of government projects in the district.

He called for decentralisation in the management of community technical colleges, saying some aspects such as inspection of construction projects can be handled and monitored through the local council.

Construction of Kalinda Community Technical College started in 2020 and is expected to be fully operational in January 2025.

About K800 million has been used on the project since construction started.
