Minister appeals for calm during JC exams

Minister of Education Agnes NyaLonje has appealed for peace as Form Two students for this year’s Junior Certificate (JC) examinations.

She made the call yesterday at Kamuzu Palace Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Lilongwe  where she monitored how the examinations have started.

Said NyaLonje: “We ask for peace among Malawians during the examinations. If people are to conduct demonstrations within this period, it will interfere with the examinations process.

“We should all work together to create a safe space for our children to write their examinations in peace because this is an important part of their lives and the country as well.”

However, the minister said this year’s JC examinations have started on a positive note.

“There were times in the past when we used to hear that some centres lacked a number of papers, but this is not the case this year,” said NyaLonje.

Later in the afternoon, Deputy Minister of Education Monica Chang’anamuno visited Mpingu CDSS in the same district where she also said the examinations were off to a good start.

“Leakage was a big problem in the past. As a ministry, we made sure that Malawi National Examinations Board should have enough security of the examination papers; hence, the improvement,” she said.

In Mzuzu, examination centre supervisors also said the examinations started well.

One of the supervisors, Aubrey Ngwira at Multi Career Secondary School, said all students arrived in time and sat for the first paper (biology) without problems.

This is the second year Maneb is administering JC examinations since government stopped the examinations in 2016 .

At least 160 000 candidates are sitting for this year’s JC examinations. This is an increase from 135 619 candidates last year.
