MERA reviews ESCOM’S proposal of hiking electricity tariffs with 99%

Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) is reviewing a proposal by Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) to increase electricity tariffs.

ESCOM is proposing a 99 percent hike of electricity tariffs citing increasing costs of production following the devaluation of the Malawi kwacha and the rising cost of living.

However – last year – MERA turned down a similar proposal by ESCOM following disagreements that arose between the energy supplier and the Power Market Limited.

Public Relations Officer for MERA Fittina Khonje has said that the energy regulator is reviewing the proposal by Escom and will also engage the general public on the matter
