MERA Attributes Fuel Shortages to Scarcity of Forex

The Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) has recently shed light on the scarcity of fuel in several major cities across the country, attributing it to the persisting shortage of foreign exchange.

In response to the concerning situation, MERA’s spokesperson, Fitina Khonje, revealed that stakeholders in the fuel sector are actively working together to address the issue and effectively minimize fuel supply disruptions.

“The occasional fuel supply disruptions, as we all know, by now, are emanating from forex challenges being experienced in the country. However, licenced importers and all stakeholders in the fuel supply chain remain committed to minimising stockouts and ensuring continuity of supply. The disruptions are not permanent,” Khonje said.

The cities of Blantyre, Zomba and Mzuzu are facing an acute fuel shortage.
