Men urged to go for medical checks

Hundreds of people from Chi lomoni Township and surrounding areas in Blantyre on Sunday turned up at Themba Private Clinic where Ulalo Foundation held a free medical check-up clinic.

Patrons received counselling on non-communicable diseases, tests on hypertension and diabetes as well as medical treatment.

Addressing people who gathered for the free clinic services, village head Chibwana commended his subjects for attending the mobile clinic in large numbers.

He said: “I am, however, concerned that 80 percent are women. Where are men? Could this be a reason why some men die young?

“From the look of things, men are deliberately shunning these medical check-ups and will probably seek help when it is too late. We need to change.”

The chief, therefore, commended those who turned up and asked them to become ambassadors for regular medical check-ups.

One of the participants, Jack Kaphetsa, said he was grateful for the mobile clinic.

“They have offered us free medical check-ups and medication. These days when one goes to a public hospital, chances are high that one will not receive the prescribed drugs as they are in short supply,” he said.

Speaking in an interview after the event, Ulalo Foundation executive director Sheilla Khumbeliwa said they were encouraged with the turnout.

“We believe we can all do our part to build a better Malawi. Our next course of action is to conduct similar initiatives in various districts in the country,” she said.
