MEC To Conduct Public Hearings

Malawi Electoral commission (MEC) says is ready to conduct hearings to get the final feedback from the public on the review of constituency and ward boundaries.

Commissioner Olivia Liwewe, Electoral Services Committee Chairperson briefed the press in Lilongwe on Saturday that they have engaged several stake-holders from different places to express views in the revising of the constituency and wards boundaries.

“We will soon conduct public hearings, attendance to these hearings is by invitation. Expected guests are Members of Parliament, Ward Councilors, political parties, traditional authorities, civil society leaders including those representing women, the youth, and people with disabilities,” she said.

All invited stakeholders to take part in the public hearings should not fail to attend and they should take this soberly because this is the final public activity on the commission calendar for boundary review, Liwewe continued.

She added that, the public will not have a chance to express the views and thoughts to the commission on boundary reviews after the closure of the public hearing phase.

According to Section 76(2) of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi, gives authority to MEC to control constituency boundaries fairly to ensure that the constituency have equal number of voters to register for voting.
