Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has defended Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara who is also the Party’s first Deputy Secretary General for endorsing President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera as torchbearer in 2025 Presidential polls.
The development follows criticisms from all corners with the social commentator Joshua Chisa Mbele describing the move as a mockery to the party’s constitution.
But speaking in an interview with the press MCP spokesperson Reverend Maurice Munthali said although the party’ candidates are elected at a convention, this does not stop members from expressing their opinions.
“The Tonse alliance government is from 2020 to 2025. MCP members are discussing issues beyond 2025 and we don’t think this can affect the alliance,” says Rev Munthali.
Livingstonia based political analyst, George Phiri has warned the party to trade carefully considering that most of them do not know what Dr Chakwera and Dr Saulos Chilima agreed before going into an alliance.
The first endorsement was made by MCP Second Vice President for the North Harry Mkandawire.
Meanwhile, Chakwera is yet to comment on the matter.
