Mchinji Police Officer handed 3-years IHL for Aiding Two Prisoner Escape Unlawful Custody

The Mchinji Senior Resident Magistrate court has on Wednesday sentenced a police officer, Jeseph Hebo, to three years imprisonment for aiding two prisoners to escape from police cell.

In August 2020, the convict helped Grevazio Pota and Chimwemwe Manda, who were answering criminal charges, escape from cell at Mchinji Police Station after he had demanded 100 hundred thousand kwacha from them in exchange for passage.

He supplied the criminals with breaking equipment which they managed to damage cell security bars and escaped before they got arrested in Dedza district.

Delivering the ruling, Senior Resident Magistrate, Eliya Zawanda, said it was necessary to give the former police officer a custodial sentence as he already knew he was committing an offense
