Man sentenced to five years in jail for killing animals in Liwonde National Park

The Liwonde First Grade Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a 49- year- old man, Leonard Smart, to five years in prison for using poison (Temik) to kill animals in the Liwonde protected forest.

Smart was found guilty of four counts of trespassing into a protected forest without permission, bringing weapons into a protected area without permission, hunting in a protected area and, possession of Temik.

This caused all the wolves, including some large birds to be found dead in the area due to this practice.

Smart hails from Chiwaya village, T/A Liwonde in Machinga district.
