Man Nabbed with Bogus K5,000 Notes in Lilongwe

The Kanengo Police have arrested a 38-year-old man named Mphatso Banda for allegedly being found with counterfeit money amounting to K190,000, consisting of fake K5,000 banknotes.

According to the police, the suspect was apprehended in Lamulungu within Mgona when attempting to purchase a Tecno mobile phone valued at K160,000, but the seller became suspicious of the presented cash.

Kanengo Police spokesperson Gresham Ngwira explained that upon police investigation, the owner of the shop tipped the police who arrested Banda and they recovered K30,000 of the total K190,000.

Ngwira stated that all the K5,000 notes had the same serial numbers and have been sent to the Reserve Bank for verification.

Banda hails from Kalonga area under Senior Chief Jelani in Kasungu district.
