Nkhunga Magistrate’s Court in Nkhotakota has sentenced a 34-year-old man to 14 years imprisonment for defiling a girl aged five.
State prosecutor Grace Mpembedza told the court that on August 20 this year, the man, name concealed to protect the identity of the victim, went to a place where he usually did piecework.
She said while riding back home after the piecework, the convict met the victim who was heading to a primary school to play with friends and she asked him for a lift.
“Instead of dropping her at the said school, he proceeded into a nearby bush where he defiled her. After that, he took the victim back home where she narrated the ordeal to her parents,” said Mpembedza.
The matter was reported to Nkhunga Police Station where the victim was issued a referral letter to Nkhunga Health Centre for medical examination.
In court, the man pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement, but prayed for leniency, saying he committed the offence out of ignorance.
But in her submission, Mpembedza asked the court to give the man a stiffer sentence, saying the victim was abused and traumatised.
In his ruling, first grade magistrate Kingsley Buleya agreed with the State and handed the man a custodial sentence to deter other would-be offenders.
