Man drowns in Lilongwe River

A 40-year-old man, Nkhondo Nakishoni has been found dead after drowning in the swollen Lilongwe river at Chiwoza Village in the district.

Lilongwe Police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu said the deceased alongside his son was on Friday last week coming from a maize field, located on the other side of the river, going home.

Upon reaching the said river, they found it full due to a heavy downpour from distant upper areas prompting Nakishoni to attempt swimming first before his son followed suit.

Chigalu said while in the middle of the river, Nakishoni was washed away by running water only to be found on Tuesday after days of search by villagers and police officers from Bunda Police Unit.

“The body of the deceased was found floating a kilometer away from the scene on December 13, 2022.

Postmortem results by Kamuzu Central Hospital revealed that death was due to suffocation,” said Chigalu.

Nakishoni hailed from Manjaalera Village, Traditional Authority Chiseka in the district.
