Man dies after being hit by a train in Machinga

A 33-year-old man, identified as Saul Chitseko, has died after a vehicle he was travelling in, together with his family, was run over by a locomotive goods train in Machinga.

The district police public relations officer Western Kansire says the incident occurred at the Mauwa level crossing, where the driver, now deceased, attempted to cross before the vehicle developed a mechanic fault and stopped at the railway line.

Kansire says five other members of the family, including a five-month-old child, sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Machinga District Hospital, where the driver was pronounced dead.

Kansire stresses that the family had just arrived in the village for an Easter holiday from Blantyre.
